Ubud has become a popular holiday village. I say this with mixed emotion because my house is in the hills just outside Ubud, and I have seen the village change over the years. If you came to Bali to experience the culture and also to have a home base that is central to the rest of the island, Ubud is where you want to stay.
Ubud is 45 minutes from the airport. The main intersection is the junction of Monkey Forest Road and Ubud’s main road, Jalan Raya Ubud. This runs from the T- junction just past the village of Peliatan all the way to the Campuan and now up to Sangangan past the Hotel Campuan. Along these roads you will find hotels, shops, restaurants and art galleries.
Ubud is famous as an arts center. European artist Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet settled here in the 1930's. Since then artists from around the world have come to Ubud to create in the beautiful surroundings. Ubud is now one of the major tourist destinations on Bali.
There are many accommodations in central Ubud and as you travel outside Ubud you can find houses or small hotels in the rice fields. Bali Advisor’s recommended accommodations are below.
